I KIngs19:11-13 “11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? “
There are times when God’s voice comes in loudly – almost as if it came from outside ones mind. But most of the time His voice, when He speaks to us, is as a whisper, or a still small voice. Sometimes we don’t know if it is our own thoughts or the voice of God, unless we’ve learned to know or discern His voice from our own thoughts. Many times we need to have it confirmed.
Gideon was asked by God to lead an army against th Medianites and the Amelikites that were taking all the Israelites wealth and goods. Gideon wanted confirmation that it was God speaking to him. After all, if what he heard was his own thoughts, then he could be slaughtered if he went up against the other army.
Gideon first requested that the dew that fell overnight would only be on a sheep skin he would lay on the floor. and not on its surroundings. The next morning only the fleece had dew on it – enough to be wrung out. Then Gideon said, let there be dew not on the fleece tonight, but on the ground round about it. The following morning there was dew everywhere except on the fleece. Then Gideon knew that it was not his own wishful thinking, but the voice of God that he had heard.
God can burst through and disrupt our train of thought when He wants to, but usually God speaks to us in a small still voice, that we need to learn to distinguish from our own thoughts. God wants a relationship with each of us. Not only does He want to hear from us as we pray, He also wants us to hear Him. He wants to commune with us.
Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I [am] God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
